Hey everyone, I'm freaking out a bit! My African Grey, Mango, just snatched a leaf from a houseplant I brought home yesterday. I'm not even sure what plant it is - got it from a friend. Mango seems fine right now, chirping and playing, but I'm worried about poisoning. Should I rush him to the emergency vet or just monitor him? I feel like such a bad bird parent right now!

Oh man, that's stressful! First - NOT A VET obviously. But I'd say check if you can ID the plant first. Maybe snap a pic and post it here or in a plant ID group? Could save you a $ emergency vet bill if it's harmless. I once panicked when my dog ate a mushroom in the yard, turned out to be non-toxic after I looked it up. Still, better safe than sorry with birds - they're sensitive!

NOT A VET, just a dog owner who's been through lots of scares. With birds, I'd be extra cautious since they hide illness well. If you can't identify the plant within an hour, I'd call an emergency vet for advice at least. My golden retriever ate a weird berry once and the vet said to bring her in immediately - turned out to be mildly toxic but treatable. Better to spend on a vet visit than regret it later!

Update: I called my friend and she said it's a spider plant! Quick google says they're non-toxic to pets. Mango is still acting normal, eating his dinner. Phew! Thanks for the advice everyone - I'll definitely be more careful with new plants. Charlie, you were right about checking first - saved me a panic trip!

Awesome news! Spider plants are safe, yeah. Glad Mango's okay! For future reference, I use this app that IDs plants for free - way cheaper than vet bills lol. Also, maybe look into some bird-safe supplements to boost his immune system after a scare like that? I've seen deals on avian vitamins online...
