Hey everyone, my 3-year-old lab mix just snatched and swallowed a weird-looking mushroom from our backyard. It was kinda orange with white spots. He seems fine right now - wagging tail, ate his dinner - but I'm freaking out a bit. Should I rush him to the emergency vet or wait and see? I know some mushrooms can be super toxic. Anyone dealt with this before?

OMG mushrooms are no joke! My persian cat nibbled on one that grew in a potted plant last year and we had to do the whole emergency vet thing. They induced vomiting and gave her activated charcoal. Cost me $500 but better safe than sorry. I'd say go now - some toxins don't show symptoms for hours and then it's too late. (Not a vet obviously, just sharing my experience!)

With rabbits we're SUPER careful about fungi - their systems are delicate. For dogs I'd still err on the side of caution. Maybe call animal poison control first? They usually charge like $75 but can tell you if it's an emergency based on the description. I keep their number saved: (888) 426-4435. Hope your pup is okay!

Not a mammal expert but in aquarium keeping, we never wait with potential toxins. Once had a snail eat a toxic plant fragment - waited overnight and it was dead by morning. If you can't ID the mushroom 100%, I'd vote for vet. Better to waste money on a false alarm than regret it later. (Def not a vet disclaimer!)

Update: Took him to emergency vet based on your advice. They induced vomiting and found mushroom pieces. Vet said it was likely mildly toxic but not deadly - gave him fluids and charcoal. $400 bill but worth it for peace of mind. Thanks everyone, especially for the poison control tip! Lesson learned: mushroom patrol in the yard tomorrow.
