Hey everyone, my betta fish, Bubbles, has been refusing to eat the new pellets I got him. I switched from flakes to a 'premium' brand last week, and he just spits them out or ignores them completely. He's acting normal otherwise, swimming around fine. Any tips to get him to eat? Or should I try mixing in some toppers? Brand recs welcome too!

lol fish can be picky too! With my reptiles, sometimes they just need time to adjust. Have you tried soaking the pellets in tank water first? Might make them softer and smellier, more like his old food. Also, maybe try feeding at different times of day? My beardie gets moody if I feed him late.

As a dog rescuer, I've seen this with pups too - sudden food changes can upset them. For fish, I'd recommend mixing old and new food gradually over a week or two. Start with 75% old, 25% new, and increase slowly. If he's still not eating, maybe try a different brand? I've heard good things about Omega One for bettas.

Big dog lover here, but my sister keeps fish! She swears by frozen or live foods as toppers - like brine shrimp or bloodworms. Might entice Bubbles to eat the pellets if you add a few as a treat. Also, check the expiration date on the new food? Sometimes it goes bad faster than you think.

Following up - Patty's soaking idea is good! Also, make sure you're not overfeeding. Fish can go a few days without eating if they're stressed by the change. If he's still refusing after a week, consider switching back to the old food temporarily. Health comes first!
